The Institute for China & World Studies of Tongji University (hereinafter referred to as “the Institute”) is a university-level research institution that was formally established on May 20, 2015 after research and approval at the Tongji Personnel Arrangement Group meeting. In July 2018, Tongji University was approved as the Base for Research on International Governance of Cyberspace under the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) & the Ministry of Education (MOE) (only 10 Chinese universities get approved). In December 2018, the Center for Asia-Pacific Studies, the Center for European Studies, the Center for Korean Studies, and the Center for Polar and Oceanic Studies of the School of Political Science & International Relations, Tongji University were approved as regional and national research centers registered with the MOE.

Professor Men Honghua serves as President and Shi Yinhong, Counselor of the State Council and Professor of Renmin University of China, is appointed as Chairman of the Academic Committee. The Institute now has an interdisciplinary and international research team consisting of 16 full-time professionals and 16 part-time professionals, including three under the National 'Ten Thousand Talents Program', four experts enjoying special government allowance of the State Council, and two chief experts of the Central Marxist Theory Research and Construction Project of MOE.

1. Strategic Positioning

The Institute is positioned as an open research institution, a subject construction base and an advisory body for decision making. It aims to build a new think-tank model that integrates scientific research as the basis, teaching as the support and consultation as the extension. Meanwhile, the Institute is committed to open research collaboration, creating a core platform for China's strategic research through the establishment of the Forum on China & World Studies, editing and publishing the Chinese Journal of Strategic Studies, and setup of the Fund for China & World Studies, and working together with domestic and foreign researchers on the great project.

2. Goals and Tasks

Focus on the studies of major domestic and international strategic issues involved in China’s peaceful development, coordinate the overall situations at home and abroad, and pay particular attention to the design of China’s overall strategic framework and the grasp of world trends.

Establish a research team with leading scholars at the macro-strategic level, young talents at the meso-strategic level, and outstanding representatives at the specific strategic level.

Organize and participate in domestic and international academic conferences, produce scientific research results, publish papers on core journals at home and abroad, and organize academic publicationsin well-known publishing houses, to build a key base for China & world studies.

Create a new discipline of China & world studies, organize the compilation of textbooks such as China's International Strategy, The Study of International Strategy, The Tradition of China Strategy, and A Comparative Study of Major Power Strategies, and bring scientific achievements into the classroom, to break new ground in this emerging discipline.

Consolidate and deepen the contact and cooperation with Office of the National Security Commission of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the International Department of the CPC Central Committee, the Ministry of Commerce, the Ministry of Education, the Cyberspace Administration of China, the National Development and Reform Commission, and other central ministries and commissions, actively undertake entrusted projects, participate in internal consultation meetings, submit high-quality consultation reports to policymakers, and offer suggestions for national development, which has received positive comments from the central leadership.

3. Development Thought

Based on political theories, supported by studies on strategies and international relations, and leveraging the strong background of the University in science and engineering to realize the complementation with liberal arts, the Institute for China & World Studies is dedicated to studying all major domestic and international issues related with China's strategy, breaking disciplinary boundaries to attract elites from other fields to join and collaborate in academic researches, and promoting the idea of bringing academic achievements into the classroom.

It has organized the Forum on China & World Studies, the Youth Forum on China & World Studies, and the Global Young Scholars Forum, etc., edited and published the Chinese Journal of Strategic Studies (in Chinese and Korean languages, with its full text included in CNKI), and organized publication of many book series including “Studies in Grand Strategy” by Peking University Press, “The Tradition of China Strategy” and “Major Power Strategy” by People's Publishing House, “Social Sciences Series of Tongji University” by China Social Sciences Press, “China's National Strategy” and “Northeast Asia Strategy” by Economic Press China, “Chinese Strategy Studies” and “Governance and Strategy” by Shanghai People’s Publishing House, helping secure a pivotal position in the field of strategic studies.
