Co-hosted by the Institute for China & World Studies and the School of Political Science & International Relations (SPSIR) of Tongji University, Chinese Social Sciences Net (CSSN), and the editorial departments of World Economics and Politics, CASS Journal of Political Science, and Contemporary Asia-Pacific Studies, and co-organized by the Institute for China & World Studies and SPSIR, the 3rd Youth Forum on China & World Studies was successfully held in Conference Room 1802, Zhonghe Building, Tongji University on November 28, 2020.
This high-end forum brought together more than 30 young experts and scholars from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the National Academy of Education Administration, Peking University, Tsinghua University, Tongji University, Fudan University, Renmin University of China, Nanjing University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Jilin University, Southeast University, China Foreign Affairs University, China Institute of International Studies (CIIS), Shanghai International Studies University (SISU), Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS),Shanghai Institutes for International Studies (SIIS), Huaqiao University, and Shanghai University of International Business and Economics (SUIBE). With the theme of “China’s Development and Relations with Other Major Powers amid COVID-19”, the participants analyzed and discussed global changes, regional interactions, national governance and China’s path after the outbreak of COVID-19, as well as many governance and strategy issues of great significance from different disciplinary perspectives. The opening ceremony was addressed by Professor Fang Ping, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Secretary of the Disciplinary Committee of Tongji University, and Li Fang, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of CSSN, and moderated by Zhong Zhenming, Associate Dean of SPSIR.
Deputy Secretary Fang Ping first welcomed the participants on behalf of Tongji University. In his speech, he pointed out that the theme of this forum highlights the uncertainty of the international environment and the certainty of China’s development under the influence of COVID-19. A number of young and middle-aged scholars who have made achievements in related fields were invited to Tongji to discuss what the world will change after the outbreak of pandemic. The forum will help us strengthen academic cooperation and share research experience on the one hand, and build an academic community for governance and strategic studies in the new era on the other.
Li Fang reviewed the development course of this forum. He said that the forum is a platform for the new blood to share ideas, complementing and growing with the Forum on China & World Studies. At present, discussing China’s development and its relations with other major powers amid COVID-19 is a major issue under the new development conditions, and the academic and media convergence at this forum will also help build a strong brand of related practices.
Then, four sessions were held to discuss “Governance and Strategy in a Global Context”, “Governance and Strategy from a Regional Perspective”, “Governance and Strategy from the Domestic Dimension”, and “China’s Approach to Governance and Strategy”. Based on their own research findings, the participants gave insightful speeches and comments online and offline from diverse dimensions and an interdisciplinary perspective. These four sessions were respectively moderated by Prof. Men Honghua, President of the Institute for China & World Studies and Dean of SPSIR, Li Fang, Executive Deputy Editor-in-Chief of CSSN, researcher Xu Jin, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of World Economy and Politics, and researcher Gao Cheng, Executive Chief Editor of Contemporary Asia-Pacific Studies. This was a gathering full of harmonious exchanges and free discussions. And it will facilitate the future academic cooperation and mutual learning.
Since 2016, three forums have been held by the Institute for China & World Studies and the School of Political Science & International Relations, Tongji University, together with CSSN, the editorial departments of CASS Journal of Political Science, World Economics and Politics and Contemporary Asia-Pacific Studies, and other institutions. This high-end forum aims to invite young scholars from domestic famous universities and research institutions to look into and analyze from different perspectives many major issues about China and the world that have emerged during China’s rise. It is committed to painting an academic picture of both breadth and depth by showcasing frontier achievements and gathering cross-domain knowledge.
