On July 5, 2018, the awarding ceremony of “Bases for Research on International Cyberspace Governance” was held in Beijing. The first batch of ten bases from Tongji University, Tsinghua University, Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications, Wuhan University, Fudan University, Harbin Institute of Technology, Beihang University, Zhejiang University, the People’s Public Security University of China, and Southeast University sent representatives to the ceremony. Prof. Jiang Bo, Vice President of Tongji University, and Prof. Men Honghua, Dean of the School of Political Science & International Relations and President of the Institute for China & World Studies at Tongji University, attended the ceremony.

      Jointly organized and selected by the Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) and the Ministry of Education (MOE), these bases are founded to leverage the teaching and research resources of universities in the Internet field, and encourage universities to further strengthen theoretical research, discipline development and talent cultivation in related fields, so that they can contribute to the international exchanges and cooperation in cyberspace and the global Internet-related development.

      It is reported that this is the first provincial and ministerial research base for the liberal arts of Tongji University. The application led by the Institute for China & World Studies of Tongji was strongly supported by the relevant ministries and commissions as well as business and academic elites. Tongji leaders also attached great importance to this base, saying that full support would be given to its development. On July 2, 2018, the President Office of Tongji University held a special meeting to discuss the development plan for the base. After listening to the report from our school, President Zhong Zhihua said that the university would increase support as required to actively implement Xi Jinping’s thought on cyberspace governance and make Tongji’s contributions to building China into a cyberpower. At a coordination meeting held on July 10, 2018, Vice President Jiang Bo requested our school and the Institute for China & World Studies to step up work arrangements and draft development plans as soon as possible. The university is looking forward to seeing high-quality results in the near future.
